Power Settlements System Business Requirements The customer is a partner in a joint venture to supply a number of large co-generation heat and power plants associated with petrochemical plant. The approach of the customer is to standardise on a suite of applications developed around the PI System to promote consistency in every power station they own or build. The customer’s requirement was to work with a PI partner to install and commission the PI systems and associated applications at all of the power plant sites, and to develop a settlements system and fuel demand model application (SSFDM) designed to meet the requirement of the Energy Conversion Agreement (ECA) with their customer Application Overview A range of tasks have been performed at each plant including PI System installation, PI to PI communications with head office, firewall installation and installation of the interface to the plant control system. This was followed by preparation of user documentation for the installed system, and user training. The purpose of the SSFDM is to generate invoices and supporting reports allowing the customer to bill the end customer. The PI data is brought into the SSFDM from an availability and despatch logging database (ADL), manual inputs and the plant control system. Indian Point developed an interface to the ADL database to bring in forecast availability and dispatch data according to the ECA and to check at intervals of a few minutes for new availability and dispatch instructions. Once data is collected, complex calculations are required to implement the requirements of the ECA and to generate invoices and supporting reports. This was achieved using the PI-ACE advanced computing engine to provide hourly, daily and monthly calculations based on an Excel model provided by the customer. Extensive testing and troubleshooting was carried out. The reports are generated by an instance of Excel running on the server as a COM object, but at no point is the Excel front end visible. A Report Manager controls this object and the output is saved as static HTML. The Report Manager provides the facility to end users to view and print the settlement reports on demand. This is by means of a web application displaying read only versions of the reports. The Report Manager also provides historical version tracking. Authorised users may also enter data for manual input tags via a custom page in the Report Manager. This page verifies the validity of each value according to a predefined specification retrieved from an external database. Business Benefits The PI System and the related applications form part of the mission critical systems underpinning the financial success of the project. Following the successful completion of this contract, Indian Point has been awarded the contract for the support of the PI Systems and applications. |
