GPMS to PI Interface

Business Requirements
Indian Point partners with Siemens Power Generation UK to help generators use their PI Systems to reduce costs, meet dispatch instructions and regulatory requirements and exceed performance targets, by bringing actionable data to the desktops of engineering, operations and management personnel.

As part of the Siemens Panacea suite, GPMS is a solution which manages EDL communications with the Grid System Operator. It monitors generation output against target in real time, decreasing imbalance risks, so reducing costs and improving profitability.

Almost all power plants in the UK have the PI System as standard, and the requirement from Siemens customers was to make the GPMS information available in the PI System. The PI System is a familiar environment for station and trading personnel, and making this information easily available means that the decision processes around power trading at the stations and the energy management centrecan be improved.

Product Overview
The GPMS to PI System interface makes it possible to display real time, future and historical GPMS data in the PI System, alongside unit and station operating information. The interface uses the GPMS External Interface to access Meter, Aggregate, Breakpoint and Miscellaneous data. Knowledge about GSO operating regime demands and the consequences on plant operation becomes available in a familiar PI System environment. The interface is now functioning in a number of power generating companies in the UK
There are four fundamental GPMS data source types:
Meter Data - 15 second plant data values. GPMS also internally averages the values at 1minute, 5 minute and 30 minute intervals. The GPMS/PI System interface can retrieve and store any of the averaged values, but will normally be used to store the 15 second raw data. The averaging of archive data values over any user required interval is a fundamental feature of the PI System.
Aggregate Data - calculated values involving other Meter and Aggregate data items. The GPMS/PI System interface retrieves and stores as for Meter data.
Breakpoint Data - effectively planned forecast values at irregular timings which are used to control the required plant power generation profiles within GPMS. Breakpoint data is normally available from the GPMS system several minutes or hours ahead of the current time, but retrospective changes to breakpoint values can be generated. The PI Archive will not accept future data and the interface therefore requests and stores only breakpoint data up to the current time in the PI Archive and accepts asynchronous notification of retrospective changes.
Breakpoint data values with future timestamps are stored by the interface in a local ADO accessible database created using Microsoft SQL Server, MS Access or Oracle. The interface automatically transfers data from this Future Database into the PI Data Archive as it becomes current. For Breakpoint data, the current PI snapshot value will correspond with the chronological first value held in the Future Database. Breakpoint data held in the Future Database may be displayed alongside PI Archive data in a PI-ProcessBook trend through the use of ProcessBook datasets.
Miscellaneous Data – other data available in GPMS such as Bid/Offer prices and volumes.

Product Benefits
Plant operations and trading personnel have comprehensive GPMS information available in a familiar environment.

This allows rapid analysis of plant status, and the ability to take advantage of commercial opportunities for the fleet, leading to improvements in bottom line profits.
